Retinal Detachment
An urgent condition requiring immediate expert care.
At The Retina Clinic London, we are highly specialised in the diagnosis and surgical management of retinal detachment—a serious and potentially sight-threatening condition where the retina separates from the back wall of the eye. This separation prevents the retina from functioning properly and, without prompt treatment, can lead to permanent vision loss.
Symptoms
Retinal detachment often occurs suddenly and may include:
- A sudden shower of floaters (tiny moving specks or cobwebs)
- Flashes of light in peripheral vision
- A shadow or “curtain” moving across your field of vision
- Blurred or distorted sight
These symptoms should never be ignored. Even a small retinal tear can progress quickly to a full detachment.
Causes & Risk Factors
The most common cause is a retinal tear, often resulting from a Posterior Vitreous Detachment (PVD)—a natural change that occurs with age. Risk factors include:
- High myopia (severe short-sightedness)
- Eye trauma
- Previous eye surgery (e.g., cataract surgery)
- Family history of retinal detachment
- Pre-existing retinal conditions
Our Approach to Diagnosis
At TRCL, diagnosis begins with a thorough consultation and one of the most comprehensive retinal examinations available in private practice. We employ:
- Ultrawidefield imaging to visualise the entire retina, including the far periphery
- High-resolution OCT scans for detailed cross-sectional images
- Indirect ophthalmoscopy with scleral indentation—the gold standard to detect retinal tears and detachment, performed with the patient lying comfortably
This meticulous approach ensures no pathology is overlooked.
How We Treat Retinal Detachment
We treat retinal detachment as a surgical emergency. Depending on the severity and location of the detachment, we may offer:
- Vitrectomy surgery – to remove the vitreous gel and reattach the retina
- Scleral buckle – to gently press the eye wall against the retina
- Laser retinopexy or cryotherapy – to seal retinal tears and prevent progression
All procedures are performed in our onsite operating theatre, fully equipped with the most advanced surgical and imaging technologies available.
Why TRCL?
Led by Professor Paulo Stanga, a pioneer in vitreoretinal surgery, our team combines:
- Unmatched surgical expertise
- Immediate access to theatre
- Advanced imaging and AI diagnostics
- Bespoke aftercare plans for optimal recovery
