Condition: Retinal Vein Occlusion (RVO)

Investigational treatment: Study medicine given by intravenous infusion

Site: The Retina Clinic London, W1G 9AY

Who this page is for

This page is written for patients, optometrists, and referrers who would like a clear overview of this clinical trial. Participation is always voluntary, and suitability is confirmed only after formal screening.

What is being studied

We are looking for participants to join a clinical trial to investigate the safety and efficacy of a new study medicine in patients with recent-onset retinal vein occlusion in one eye.

Retinal vein occlusion is a blockage in one of the veins of the retina. It can affect retinal blood flow and may lead to reduced vision, retinal swelling, or other complications.

Because this is a research study, the treatment is investigational and is only available within the clinical trial.

The current treatment options for retinal vein occlusions only treat complications to limit vision loss. The new study medicine is an almost exact copy of a naturally occurring human protein produced to assist in the protection and repair of damaged cells in the retina and its veins, and with the intention to treat the reason for the retinal vein occlusion, not only the complications.

What participation involves

The study includes 11 visits to the study eye clinic during a period of four months. Participants receive the study medicine daily for 3 to 5 days as a 30-minute infusion into a vein in the arm.

Who may be eligible

You may be able to take part if:

  • you are 18 years or older
  • you have recently been diagnosed with retinal vein occlusion in one eye
  • this has been within the last 3 weeks
  • if you are female, you are post-menopausal or surgically sterile
  • you do not have any other serious illnesses

What we may assess during screening

Screening is used to confirm whether the study is suitable and safe for you. This may include review of your medical and eye history, vision testing, retinal imaging, and general health checks. Eligibility is confirmed only after formal screening.

Practical points for patients

Participation is voluntary, and you may stop taking part at any time. The study medicine and study-related procedures are free of charge, and travel costs for study visits can be claimed.

For optometrists and referrers

The most useful referral flags are:

  • recent-onset RVO in one eye
  • presentation within 3 weeks
  • age 18 or over
  • no major competing systemic illness

If you would like to discuss a possible referral, our team can advise on next steps and suitability for screening.
