The Retina Clinic London combines specialist patient care with active clinical research across retinal, vitreous, vascular and optic nerve disease. Our consultants contribute to clinical trials, peer-reviewed research, imaging innovation and the development of new approaches to diagnosis, monitoring and treatment in ophthalmology.
Our research activity reflects the full range of conditions seen in our clinics, including vitreous disease such as floaters, retinal and macular disorders, vascular conditions such as retinal vein occlusion, inherited retinal dystrophies, uveitis and inflammatory eye disease, and glaucoma. The team is also involved in advancing imaging techniques and surgical approaches used in everyday clinical practice.
Our consultants regularly attend and present at major national and international ophthalmology conferences, sharing research findings, surgical experience and developments in retinal, vitreous and vascular care with the wider medical community.

Clinical trials
Clinical trials form an important part of our research activity. We participate in ethically approved studies investigating potential new treatments and improved methods of diagnosing and monitoring eye disease.
These studies may include conditions such as macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, retinal vein occlusion, vitreous floaters, inherited retinal dystrophies and inflammatory eye disease.

Participation in a clinical trial is always voluntary. Each study has specific eligibility criteria, and enrolment is subject to screening, informed consent and the availability of a suitable place.

Our involvement in research helps ensure that our clinicians remain closely engaged with developments in retinal, vitreous, vascular and optic nerve disease, including advances in imaging, diagnostics, medical therapy and surgical techniques.
Where appropriate, evidence from research and clinical studies may inform how a condition is assessed, monitored or treated. However, participation in research does not imply that every patient will be offered an investigational treatment. Clinical care is always based on an individual assessment, established evidence, and the treatment options considered most appropriate by the responsible consultant.
Investigational treatments are only offered through formal research or clinical trial pathways, with appropriate screening, eligibility assessment and informed consent.
