A Prestigious Medical Retina Fellowship Integrating Imaging, Research, and Clinical Care

The Retina Clinic London offers a unique one-year Medical Retina Fellowship under the supervision of our distinguished medical team, led by Professor Paulo Eduardo Stanga. Located in the renowned Harley Street Health District, this immersive programme is designed for ophthalmologists with a passion for advancing medical retina care through cutting-edge imaging, clinical trials, and patient-centred practice.

Term of Post

Start Date: 1 October 2025
Duration: 1 year (extendable annually up to 3 years, subject to satisfactory progress)
Location: The Retina Clinic London, 24 Queen Anne Street, W1G 9AX
Supervision: The Retina Clinic London Medical Team, led by Professor Paulo Eduardo Stanga
Salary: £55,000 to £65,000, depending on experience

Main Job Purpose

The Fellow will work closely with Professor Stanga and Senior Staff to conduct translational research projects and see patients in clinic. They will actively participate in and help lead multiple funded research projects, including but not limited to:

  • Laser-tissue interaction using prototype and approved subthreshold laser systems
  • Intravitreal pharmacotherapy for neovascular AMD, diabetic macular oedema, retinal vein occlusion, amongst others
  • Vitreous, retinal, and choroidal imaging (including Swept Source OCT, En-Face OCT, OCT Angiography)
  • Gene therapy surgery and anti-complement injections for advanced dry AMD with Geographic Atrophy
  • YAG Laser Vitreolysis and management of vitreous floaters and myodesopsia
  • Advanced imaging of vitreous floaters, cortical vitreous, peripheral retina, and vitreoretinal interface
  • Ultra-widefield, multi-wavelength imaging
  • Adaptive optics imaging
  • AI-assisted imaging and diagnostics

The Retina Clinic London is the only site in the world conducting several of these research projects.

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Recruit, examine, and treat patients enrolled in industry-sponsored clinical trials
  • Participate in administering treatments, including intravitreal injections and ophthalmic examinations
  • See and assist in treating private patients under the direct care of The Retina Clinic London Medical Team
  • Maintain strict adherence to study protocols and Good Clinical Practice
  • Submit and manage regulatory documentation for clinical trials
  • Prepare presentations, study reports, research publications, and present at international scientific meetings
  • Provide updates on clinical trial performance to diverse audiences
  • Assist and observe in theatre where complex surgical retina and anterior segment surgery is performed

Job Specifications

The role requires:

  • Medical degree and minimum 1 year of full-time postgraduate ophthalmology training with laser experience
  • Ability to interpret results, manage databases, and prepare presentations
  • Experience with literature searches, scientific writing, and conference participation
  • Excellent time management, resilience under pressure, and prioritisation skills
  • Strong communication, patient interaction, and teamwork abilities
  • Willingness to undertake self-directed learning, attend internal and external training, and manage personal development
  • Familiarity with retina equipment and troubleshooting
  • Flexibility regarding duties, working hours, and managing urgent situations beyond standard hours
  • GMC registration with license to practice in the UK (Doctors applying from abroad must have completed the IELTS or OET English exams to the required standard to apply for GMC registration).

Post-Fellowship Opportunities

Upon successful completion of the Fellowship, the candidate may be offered a full-time Consultant position at The Retina Clinic London. Simultaneously, they may have the opportunity to undertake an external Vitreoretinal Fellowship under the mentorship of a senior consultant, allowing for further surgical development.
