What happens when a world-leading retinal surgeon designs a clinic from the ground up—around time, technology and truly personal care? This is the inside story of The Retina Clinic London: why we exist, how we work, and what makes our patient experience fundamentally different.

A clinic built around patients, not processes

The Retina Clinic London was created to give patients time, clarity and choice. From your first visit, our aim is to reach a diagnosis and outline a treatment plan in the same appointment, supported by multimodal testing performed on site. This reduces repeat trips, shortens the path to treatment and lowers anxiety. We operate as a specialist, self-funded clinic to preserve the independence required for comprehensive testing in a single visit and for true shared decision-making about all available options. No GP referral is needed.

Visionary leadership, everyday accessibility

The clinic is led by Professor Paulo-Eduardo Stanga, a globally recognised vitreoretinal surgeon whose team is routinely invited to present and publish internationally. Our consultants include professors and surgeons with deep subspecialty expertise, supported by a full-time clinical and research team to ensure continuity of care. Our Harley Street Health District locations—24 Queen Anne Street (clinic) and 140 Harley Street (research facility)—offer a discreet, central base for both private care and clinical research.

Technology you will actually feel in your experience

Patients benefit from one of the most advanced private retinal set-ups in the UK: ultra-high-resolution OCT (including ultrawidefield and angiography), navigated peripheral OCT, fundus autofluorescence, electrophysiology, adaptive optics and more. Crucially, we use artificial intelligence in routine clinical practice to monitor geographic atrophy and retinal fluid—bringing research-grade precision into daily care. Treatment is equally comprehensive: on-site surgical theatre for vitrectomy and cataract procedures, retinal and YAG lasers (including floater vitreolysis), photodynamic therapy and photobiomodulation for carefully selected indications.

Research woven into clinical care

We bridge the traditional gap between clinic and research. Many patients are offered participation in investigator-led or industry-sponsored clinical trials, providing access to pioneering therapies—often years before widespread availability. Where appropriate, study costs and reasonable travel/accommodation are covered by sponsors. Prof. Stanga frequently serves as national Chief Investigator, underscoring our commitment to scientific rigour and patient safety. Current programmes include geographic atrophy, wet AMD, vitreous floaters and opacities, diabetic eye disease and selected inherited retinal diseases.

Conditions we treat and the pathways we follow

Our consultants manage the full spectrum of retinal and related ocular conditions: AMD (dry and wet), diabetic retinopathy and maculopathy, macular hole and epiretinal membrane, retinal tears and detachment, vitreous floaters, uveitis, inherited retinal diseases, and cataract. Each pathway combines advanced imaging, functional testing and evidence-based intervention—including named-patient access to complement inhibition for geographic atrophy and rapid access to anti-VEGF therapy for wet AMD.

Your first consultation: comprehensive by design

All new patients begin with a specialist vitreoretinal examination that typically includes ultrawidefield imaging, high-resolution OCT and, where indicated, angiography and electrophysiology—plus a full dilated retinal assessment to the ora serrata using scleral indentation. You leave with clear findings, a written plan and direct access to your consultant. Same-day treatment is possible when clinically necessary. Initial consultations start from £650 and include all testing required for that visit; detailed estimates for any subsequent treatment are provided after assessment.
