Introducing Dr Francisco Martínez-Sagasta, TRCL Clinical and Research Fellow

The Retina Clinic London (TRCL) is pleased to welcome Dr Francisco Martínez-Sagasta as Clinical and Research Fellow.

An ophthalmologist with a particular interest in medical and surgical retina, vitreoretinal disease and advanced retinal imaging, Dr Martínez-Sagasta brings international clinical, academic and research experience to the role.

Professor Paulo Eduardo Stanga said:

“Francisco’s enthusiasm for retinal medicine, clinical research and continued learning makes him an excellent addition to our team.

“Our Fellowship Programme is designed to support talented ophthalmologists as they develop their clinical judgement, research experience and understanding of emerging technologies and treatments. We are delighted to welcome Francisco and to support the next stage of his development.”

Dr Martínez-Sagasta joins TRCL through its Medical Retina Fellowship Programme, which combines supervised clinical experience with research, specialist mentorship and academic development.

International clinical and research experience

Dr Martínez-Sagasta obtained his medical degree from the University of Buenos Aires, where he also taught pharmacology. He subsequently completed specialist training in ophthalmology at Hospital Alemán de Buenos Aires, alongside postgraduate training with the Argentine Society of Ophthalmology.

Before joining TRCL, he worked as a clinical research sub-investigator, gaining experience in the conduct of clinical trials, adherence to research protocols and the assessment of emerging approaches to patient care.

He later pursued further international training to broaden his clinical and research experience. His professional interests include medical retina, vitreoretinal disease, emerging retinal therapies and innovative imaging techniques.

“Joining The Retina Clinic London has given me the opportunity to deepen my experience in retinal disease while contributing to research into new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches,” said Dr Martínez-Sagasta.

“It is a privilege to work alongside Professor Stanga and the wider clinical team, learning from their experience while contributing to work that may help inform future patient care. I also value the opportunity to share knowledge and contribute to the education of colleagues across the team.”

His work at TRCL

As Clinical and Research Fellow, Dr Martínez-Sagasta is involved in research protocols investigating retinal disease and emerging therapeutic approaches.

Working alongside Professor Stanga and the wider TRCL medical team, he contributes to specialist retinal clinics, clinical research and the use of advanced imaging technologies in the assessment and monitoring of retinal conditions.

The role also enables him to build on his previous experience in medical retina, vitreoretinal disease and clinical trials while gaining further exposure to complex retinal conditions, evolving diagnostic technologies and investigational treatments.

Dr Martínez-Sagasta has a particular interest in how advanced imaging and clinical research can improve the understanding of retinal disease and inform future approaches to patient care.

A commitment to education and collaboration

Alongside his clinical and research interests, Dr Martínez-Sagasta has a strong interest in medical education.

His previous experience teaching pharmacology, together with his enthusiasm for sharing knowledge with colleagues and other members of the clinical team, complements the academic and collaborative environment of the Fellowship Programme.

The Retina Clinic London is delighted to welcome Dr Martínez-Sagasta to its clinical and research community and looks forward to supporting his continued professional and academic development.
